African American Fine Art Auction At Swann Galleries

Norman Lewis

A collection of works by some of the most important black artists in the last two centuries is set for the bidding block at Swann Galleries this month. The African American Fine Art auction features all-star artists like Elizabeth CatlettNorman Lewis and the "Trumpet Player" creator Charles White.

One of the highlights of the auction is Catlett's "I am the Black Woman" series, a collection of 14 linoleum cuts depicting icons like Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth. Featuring the tightly silhouetted faces of heroines throughout history, the complete set of prints is expected to fetch up to $100,000.

The items in the auction's painting category are also worth a glance. There is Hughie Lee-Smith's "#4," a prime example of the artist's Detroit-inspired '50s works, as well as a rare oil-on-wood work by "The Banjo Lesson" artist Henry Ossawa Tanner.
