Russian class 949a Antey submarine Kursk exploded on 12 August 2000, when it sank in the Barents Sea. Hydrogen peroxide leak into a torpedo led to explosion of its fuel, causing the submarine to hit the bottom, which in turn triggered the detonation of further torpedo warheads about two minutes later.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree awarding the Order of Courage to all 117 of the crew. The title ‘Hero of the Russian Federation’ was awarded to the submarine's captain, Gennady Lyachin. After an explosion in front crewmembers sought refuge the yellow compartment in rear. As such, most of the dead bodies were found in this was the location.
The names of all perished sailors are inscribed on this Kursk submarine.
