Traditionally accepted primary colors - red, green, and blue form the base of colors that may be combined to make range of other colors for human applications (human color vision is trichromatic).  Other variants include subtractive combinations of colors - mixing of pigments or dyes etc., such as in printing.  Normal primaries used are cyan, magenta, and yellow.

Combination of any two primary colors creates a secondary color.  Combination of red, yellow, and blue is popular among artists.  Scientists gave us three primary colors.  Through the art of mixing colors, Ealy Mays in in search of a 4th.
