Reprising the theme of, “Where would we be without Mammies?” Every little town in America was once ruled by Mammies. At some time or another, everyone in America – black or white, had a Mammy.  Caretaker, servant, domestic worker, helper, maids...  She was the family therapist and source of strength.  Mammy was the one the husband trusted the most with the family. When Rhett Butler came back from his trip (Gone with the Wind), his first retort was to Mammy (Hattie McDaniel) to tell him “what’s been going on in this house.”
